WATCH Dashcam Captures Dramatic Moment Semi-Truck Slams into I-295 Overpass in Mount Laurel

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ — A terrifying scene unfolded on one of South Jersey’s busiest highways Tuesday afternoon as a tractor-trailer collided with an overpass on I-295. The entire incident, which looked like something out of an action movie, was caught on dashcam footage that has since sent shockwaves through the Burlington County community.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:53 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-295 in Mount Laurel, according to a spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police. While the highway is notorious for heavy traffic, the visual of a massive rig striking a bridge structure brought local commuting to a standstill.

The Sequence of Events

The dashcam footage reveals a chaotic chain of events. According to New Jersey State Police, the tractor-trailer first collided with a passenger car. The impact sent the massive vehicle veering off the main roadway and into the grass median.

However, the danger didn’t end there. As the truck plowed through the median, it reached the Church Road overpass. Because the median ground is often elevated or angled differently than the paved road, the top of the tractor-trailer’s trailer struck the bottom of the overpass structure with immense force.

Aftermath: “Peeled Back Like a Tin Can”

Photos from the scene shared by NJ Advance Media and local commuters show the devastating extent of the damage. The roof of the trailer appeared to have been “peeled back” entirely, exposing the cargo inside. The cab of the truck—where the driver sits—also sustained significant front-end and structural damage from the initial collision and the subsequent impact with the bridge.

Miraculously, despite the severity of the visual damage and the speed at which the crash occurred, authorities have confirmed that no injuries were reported. Both the driver of the tractor-trailer and the occupants of the car involved walked away from the wreckage.

Investigation and Structural Concerns

The New Jersey State Police are currently leading an investigation into what caused the initial collision between the truck and the car. While weather conditions were not immediately cited as a factor, that stretch of I-295 is known for rapid lane changes and heavy merging traffic near the Mount Laurel exits.

Whenever a vehicle strikes an overpass, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) typically performs a structural integrity check. Engineers must ensure that the “peeling” of the truck didn’t result in any cracks or displacements in the bridge’s support beams. For now, the overpass remains open, but the grass median showed significant scarring from the truck’s tires.

The Growing Danger on Burlington County Highways

Local residents have long complained about the safety of the I-295 and Route 38 corridor. This latest accident serves as a stark reminder of the “close calls” that happen daily. Dashcam footage has become an essential tool for state police in these scenarios, helping to determine fault and understand the physics of high-speed highway crashes.

The southbound lanes saw significant rubbernecking delays for several hours following the 2:53 p.m. crash as crews worked to tow the mangled remains of the trailer and clear debris from the median.

What do you think, South Jersey drivers? Is I-295 getting more dangerous, or was this just a freak accident? Do we need stricter lane restrictions for tractor-trailers in Mount Laurel?
