HESPERIA, CA – What began as a return road trip from a San Diego music festival ended in flames and attempted murder charges after a woman allegedly set a vehicle on fire at a local truck stop.
Midnight Inferno at Pilot Truck Stop
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies rushed to the Pilot truck stop on Highway 395 shortly after midnight on June 16. Upon arrival, emergency crews found two vehicles fully engulfed in flames.
According to investigators, two people were sleeping inside one of the adjacent vehicles when the fire erupted. Fortunately, both individuals woke up in time and managed to escape without injury.
Arrest and Serious Charges
Authorities arrested Nicole Incero Najlis, 30, at the scene. Inmate records show Najlis was taken into custody at 12:52 a.m. at the 8701 U.S. 395 Highway location. She is currently being held at the West Valley Jail on charges of attempted murder and arson.
Argument Escalates on I-15 Corridor
The owner of the destroyed Honda Element, James Bahr of Las Vegas, stated that he had offered Najlis a ride to help her out during difficult personal circumstances. According to Bahr’s account, an argument broke out during the drive regarding prescription medication.
Bahr alleged that Najlis became physical, striking him while he was driving and causing him to lose control of the steering wheel. This forced him to pull into the Hesperia gas station to remove her from the vehicle.
Explosive Fuel Ignited
According to the Sheriff’s Department, investigators believe Najlis poured fuel into the Honda’s trunk and ignited it. The situation was uniquely dangerous as Bahr is a professional pyrotechnician; his vehicle contained specialized propane tanks and fire-effects equipment.
The resulting blaze completely destroyed the Honda Element, along with approximately $12,000 worth of personal belongings, tools, and professional equipment.
The investigation remains ongoing. Under U.S. law, Najlis is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
