Three Skeletal Remains Discovered Inside Foreclosed Burlington Home

BURLINGTON, CT – A shocking discovery was made inside a recently sold Burlington home when the new owner uncovered the skeletal remains of three individuals after winning the property at a foreclosure auction.

The Grim Discovery

Connecticut State Police troopers responded to a residence on Stanwich Lane around 4:46 p.m. on June 14. The property had just been purchased “as is” through a public foreclosure auction.

When the new owner entered the structure for the first time, they discovered skeletal remains belonging to three separate individuals. Detectives from the Western District Major Crime Unit took over the scene immediately.

No Suspicious Activity Suspected

Despite the unsettling nature of the find, State Police officials emphasized that there is no immediate threat to the community.

  • Official Stance: Authorities stated there is currently “no indication of anything suspicious” and no criminal aspect tied to the case.
  • Public Safety: Officials have classified the discovery as an isolated incident.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is working to determine the identities and causes of death. Court filings indicate the bodies were in an “advanced state of decomposition,” suggesting they had been inside the home for an extended period.

Legal Complexity Surrounding the Sale

The home was previously purchased by a couple in 2019, and foreclosure proceedings began in August 2025. The subsequent public auction took place on June 6, where the winning bidder secured the property without interior access—a standard practice for “as is” foreclosure sales.

Chris Thogmartin, the court-appointed attorney overseeing the sale, noted that pre-auction letters requesting interior access from the previous occupants went unanswered.

Following the discovery, Thogmartin filed a motion seeking court guidance. The identity of the deceased and the exact timing of their deaths could potentially invalidate the foreclosure judgment. The court must now decide whether the sale will proceed or if the buyer’s $82,000 deposit should be returned.
