Mother of Tanner Horner Delivers Tearful Testimony in Athena Strand Penalty Phase

Mother of Tanner Horner Delivers Tearful Testimony in Athena Strand Penalty Phase

WISE COUNTY, TX — The capital murder trial of Tanner Horner took a deeply personal and emotional turn on Wednesday as jurors began weighing whether the former FedEx driver should be executed or spend the rest of his life in prison.

Horner has already pleaded guilty to the 2022 kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand. Because the state is seeking the death penalty, the current proceedings are focused on “mitigating factors”—evidence regarding Horner’s upbringing and mental state that might persuade a jury to spare his life.

A Mother’s Shame on the Stand

The most gripping moment of the day came when Tanner Horner’s mother took the witness stand. Visibly nervous and emotional, she requested that her face be blurred on the courtroom camera before recounting a life defined by trauma and substance abuse.

The defense’s strategy is to show how Horner’s childhood was shaped by a cycle of abuse that began long before he was born.

  • Early Trauma: Horner’s mother detailed her own history of being a high school dropout and a victim of sexual abuse by her stepfather starting at age four.
  • Substance Abuse: She admitted to years of using meth and heroin and working as a stripper to survive. She revealed she continued to use drugs during the first eight weeks of her pregnancy with Tanner.
  • A Childhood in Rehab: The jury heard how Tanner and his brother spent much of their early lives living in rehab centers with their mother. In one haunting anecdote, she described “nodding out” on a toilet while a young Tanner watched, fearing his mother was dead.

“I don’t remember having dreams. I didn’t have a good childhood,” she told the court. “I’m wearing my shame like a badge now.”

“I’m So Mad At Him”

Despite her attempts to explain the environment in which Horner was raised, his mother did not shy away from the horror of his crimes. When asked how she felt about her son today, she told the court, “I’m so mad at him.”

She noted that while growing up, she felt Tanner was “different” and that medical professionals “always kind of treated him for something he didn’t have.”

The Road to the Death Penalty

The prosecution has already rested its case, during which they presented graphic and heart-wrenching evidence. This included:

  • Audio and video recordings from the investigation.
  • A haunting photo of young Athena Strand inside Horner’s FedEx van shortly before she was killed.
  • Testimony from Athena’s mother, who described the unbearable loss of her daughter.

A judge has cleared several expert witnesses—including specialists in neuroscience, psychology, and prison behavior—to testify over the coming days as the defense continues to argue that Horner’s brain and upbringing should disqualify him from the death penalty.
