Children Under 4 Witness Horror as Arizona Chiropractor Allegedly Kills Ex-Wife and Himself

Marana, Arizona — A tragic murder-suicide investigation is underway in Arizona after a woman was fatally shot outside her home while her two young children allegedly witnessed the horrifying violence, according to authorities.

Police say the suspected gunman, identified as the woman’s ex-husband, later fled the scene before taking his own life in a nearby desert area.

Mother Found Shot Outside Arizona Home

According to the Marana Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 5:05 p.m. on May 25 near the 6700 block of West Alegria Drive.

When officers arrived, they discovered 36-year-old Mikaela Durfey suffering from “gunshot trauma” near the driveway of her home.

Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but Durfey was later pronounced dead.

Authorities quickly identified her ex-husband, 37-year-old Brian Schnurr, as the suspect after learning he had allegedly fled the area in a blue Dodge Challenger immediately following the shooting.

Children Allegedly Witnessed Violence

Local reports from ABC 15 Arizona, stated that the former couple’s children allegedly witnessed the deadly confrontation.

According to News 4 Tucson, Schnurr had reportedly picked up the children and placed them into the vehicle moments before the shooting occurred.

The children, both reportedly under the age of 4, were later found unharmed inside the suspect’s vehicle after police located it near the 8500 block of North Silverbell Road.

Authorities confirmed the children were safely recovered during the search operation.

Suspect Found Dead in Desert Area

With help from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department air unit, investigators continued searching for Schnurr after locating the abandoned vehicle.

Police later found him in a nearby desert area suffering from what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It has been confirmed the two deceased were the parents of the children located in the vehicle,” police stated.

Authorities later confirmed the case is officially being investigated as a murder-suicide.

Community Left Shocked by Tragedy

The incident has deeply shaken residents in the area, many of whom described the violence as heartbreaking and disturbing.

News reports identified Schnurr as a local chiropractor, while Durfey reportedly worked as a licensed counselor.

Court records reviewed by media outlets reportedly showed that Durfey filed for divorce from Schnurr in July 2025.

Neighbors said they heard multiple gunshots on Monday evening before learning about the deadly incident.

Longtime resident Charles Wipperman described the tragedy as “very sad and shocking.”

“Anytime somebody passes away, it’s sad,” Wipperman told KOLD. “Whether it’s a friend or a family member, when someone is murdered, no matter who it is, that is horrible.”

Investigation Remains Ongoing

Authorities say the investigation remains active as detectives continue reviewing evidence and the circumstances leading up to the deadly shooting.
