ALPHARETTA, GA – A wild bear wandering through suburban neighborhoods prompted a temporary school lockdown and a strict warning from local authorities to stay away.
School Lockdown and Sightings
The Alpharetta Police Department received multiple reports of a bear moving through the city, including sightings in the Lantern Ridge neighborhood.
The activity prompted officials at Alpharetta Elementary School to initiate a precautionary lockdown. Local resident Zach Hudson shared that his children informed him of the lockdown after students were kept safely inside due to the bear’s proximity to the campus.
Police Warning: No Social Media Content
Capt. Jakai Braithwaite urged the public to remain calm but stay alert. Crucially, police are explicitly warning residents not to approach the animal for photos or social media content.
Taking selfies or feeding wild bears poses severe safety risks and often leads to the animal being euthanized if it becomes habituated to humans.
Why Bears Are Entering Suburbs
According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, bear sightings typically spike during late spring and summer.
However, local residents point to massive construction and rapid development in the Alpharetta area as a primary cause. The heavy construction is believed to be pushing wildlife out of their natural habitats and into residential zones.
