LEXINGTON, SC – Law enforcement officials discovered a body on Wednesday, June 17, believed to be that of Elena Katherine Moore, a 39-year-old local personal trainer who vanished nearly a week ago.
The Discovery on Old Cherokee Road
Acting on a community tip, police and fire personnel launched an extensive search at 1:30 p.m. in the wooded areas near North Lake Drive and Old Cherokee Road. At approximately 2:48 p.m., investigators located the body.
While the Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not officially confirmed the identity, Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green stated during a news conference that the clothing matches what Moore was last seen wearing.
Timeline of Disappearance
Moore, a well-known personal trainer at Wolf’s Fitness Center, was reported missing on June 12 after family and friends lost contact with her.
- June 11, 6:40 p.m.: Moore signed into the Planet Fitness on Whiteford Way.
- June 11, 9:17 p.m.: Surveillance footage captured her walking past a nearby Publix toward Old Cherokee Road, wearing an olive-green zip-up hoodie and black athletic pants.
Previous search efforts behind a local Lowe’s and Planet Fitness had turned up no leads until the community tip came in.
State Officials Take Over Investigation
Because the circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear, Chief Green announced that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been requested to take over the lead in the investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the cause or manner of death, and officials have not stated whether foul play is suspected.
Chief Green expressed deep gratitude to the public, noting that the department received hundreds of tips that directly assisted every step of the search operation.
