Los Angeles, California — Beachgoers planning to visit the Southern California coastline this weekend are being urged to use extreme caution as dangerous surf and rip current conditions threaten several popular beaches, including the Malibu Coast.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a hazardous beach statement warning residents and visitors about potentially life-threatening ocean conditions expected from Saturday evening through Monday morning.
Dangerous Rip Currents Raise Safety Concerns
According to forecasters, strong rip currents will create hazardous swimming and surfing conditions across Los Angeles County beaches throughout the weekend.
“There is an increased risk of ocean drowning,” the NWS forecast reads. “Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore.”
Officials say even experienced swimmers can struggle in these powerful currents, which are capable of dragging people far from shore within seconds.
The warning includes beaches along the Malibu Coast, a popular destination known for surfing and ocean recreation.
High Surf and Flooding Possible
In addition to dangerous currents, large waves are expected to batter the coastline, increasing the risk of beach erosion and minor coastal flooding.
Authorities say flooding is most likely during evening high tides between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., when water levels are expected to peak.
The combination of rough surf and elevated tides may create dangerous conditions near parking areas, coastal walkways, and low-lying shoreline sections.
Residents living near vulnerable coastal areas are being advised to stay alert for changing ocean conditions through the weekend.
Officials Warn Against Rocks and Jetties
The National Weather Service is also warning people to avoid rocky shoreline areas, including jetties and tidepools, which can become extremely dangerous during periods of high surf.
“Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks,” the NWS forecast reads.
Large waves can unexpectedly crash over rocks, knocking people into rough waters where rescue can become difficult. Officials are encouraging beach visitors to remain near staffed lifeguard towers and avoid entering the ocean if conditions appear unsafe.
Other California Counties Also Under Alert
The hazardous conditions are not limited to Los Angeles County. Similar beach dangers are forecast for Santa Barbara County, where officials are also monitoring the powerful surf system.
Meanwhile, a high surf advisory has been issued for both Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties this weekend.
Forecasters say wave heights in those areas could reach an alarming 10 to 15 feet, creating dangerous conditions for swimmers, surfers, and small boats.
The large surf could also impact harbor entrances and coastal roads near the shoreline.
Beachgoers Urged to Use Caution
Officials are encouraging anyone visiting California beaches this weekend to remain cautious and follow all safety warnings issued by lifeguards and local authorities.
Experts recommend:
- Staying out of the water if warning flags are posted
- Avoiding rocks, jetties, and tidepools
- Never swimming alone
- Keeping children closely supervised near the shoreline
- Paying attention to changing tide and wave conditions
With millions expected to visit beaches during the warm weekend weather, authorities hope early warnings will prevent tragedies along the coast.
