California Man Arrested After Police Say He Intentionally Ran Over His 89-Year-Old Father

Long Beach, California — A Southern California man has been arrested after police say he intentionally ran over and killed his 89-year-old father during a family disturbance in Long Beach.

Authorities identified the suspect as 50-year-old Robert Porter, who was taken into custody Saturday following the incident in a residential neighborhood.

The victim, identified as William Porter, was found pinned beneath a vehicle when officers arrived at the scene, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Officers responded to report of family disturbance

Police said officers were dispatched around 1:50 p.m. Saturday to the 600 block of West Wardlow Road near Magnolia Avenue after receiving reports of a disturbance involving family members.

When officers arrived at the residence, they discovered the elderly man trapped beneath a vehicle in front of the home.

Officers immediately attempted to rescue the man while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

Authorities said nearby residents stepped in to assist officers during the rescue attempt.

Neighbors helped officers lift vehicle

According to police, residents in the area provided a floor jack that officers used in an effort to lift the vehicle and free the victim.

Officers used the jack to raise the vehicle high enough to pull the man from underneath it before firefighters arrived.

Emergency personnel with the Long Beach Fire Department then provided medical assistance at the scene.

Despite those efforts, officials said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say crash appears intentional

Investigators said early findings suggest the driver of the vehicle deliberately struck the elderly man.

Authorities said the suspect remained at the scene and was later taken into custody by police.

Detectives have not yet released additional details about what led to the alleged incident.

Suspect booked on murder charge

Police confirmed that Robert Porter was booked on suspicion of murder following the investigation.

His bail was set at $2 million, according to authorities.

Officials have not released information about whether the suspect has obtained legal representation.
