Chicago Officer Killed, Another Critically Wounded in 'Senseless' Hospital Shooting; Suspect Captured After Manhunt

CHICAGO, IL — The city of Chicago is in mourning after a routine hospital escort turned into a deadly nightmare on Saturday. One Chicago police officer has been killed and a second is “fighting for his life” after a robbery suspect opened fire inside Swedish Hospital, sparking a massive manhunt through a local neighborhood.

The shooting has raised urgent questions regarding security protocols at the facility, as authorities struggle to explain how a suspect in custody managed to obtain a firearm.

Violence Errupts Inside Swedish Hospital

The incident began when Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers escorted a male suspect to the emergency department at Endeavor Health’s Swedish Hospital for observation. The suspect had been taken into custody earlier for an alleged robbery.

According to hospital spokespersons, the suspect was screened with a metal detection wand upon entry and was accompanied by law enforcement at all times. Despite these measures, the suspect managed to secure a firearm while inside.

“It’s still under investigation,” said Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling, declining to elaborate on how the weapon was obtained. “I can’t get too deep into it.”

The Officers: A Ten-Year Veteran and a 21-Year Pro

The wounded officers were rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where the department received the news they had feared.

  • Officer Deceased: A 38-year-old officer and 10-year veteran of the force was pronounced dead.
  • Officer Critically Wounded: A 57-year-old officer with 21 years of service remains in critical condition.

Superintendent Snelling decried the “senseless loss of life,” adding, “These are the dangers of policing. These officers know it, they understand it, but they still go out and they do it.”

Neighborhood Lockdown and Capture

Immediately after the shooting, the suspect fled the hospital grounds, leading to a frantic search. The Swedish Hospital campus was placed under immediate lockdown as SWAT teams and local police flooded the area.

Reports indicate the suspect entered a private residence several blocks away from the hospital. SWAT teams quickly surrounded the home, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. A “third weapon” was recovered at the scene of the arrest, according to Snelling.

A City in Mourning

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called the shooting a “tragedy” for the entire city, thanking the CPD for their bravery. Swedish Hospital remains closed to the public as law enforcement leads a forensic investigation into the shooting. Hospital officials have confirmed that all other patients and staff members are safe.

The names of the officers have not yet been released, pending the notification of their families.
