BUFFALO, WY – Residents in the Johnson County area are being urged to prepare for a return of winter conditions as the National Weather Service (NWS) predicts heavy snow and high-speed winds starting Monday night.
Localized Heavy Snowfall
While much of the country remains dry this week, a localized weather system will impact the Rocky Mountains. The city of Buffalo, specifically areas near the Johnson County Airport, is expected to see significant accumulation.
Forecasters predict that high-altitude regions could receive 10 inches of snow or more throughout the week. The first wave is expected Monday night, with temperatures dropping to around 24 degrees.
High Wind Warning
The biggest concern for travelers will be the dangerous wind gusts.
- Peak Winds: In northwestern Wyoming, speeds are expected to hit 50 mph around midnight on Tuesday, May 12.
- Local Impact: The Buffalo area and the rest of the state will face sustained gusts between 30 and 40 mph.
These winds, combined with fresh snowfall, are likely to cause reduced visibility and drifting snow on mountain passes.
Short Break Before Thursday Storm
After the initial Monday night flurry, conditions are expected to stabilize slightly until Thursday. Another round of snow is forecast to hit the Rockies and Buffalo later in the week, potentially extending icy road conditions into the weekend.
Travel Safety Precautions
Authorities are advising against unnecessary travel during peak storm hours. For those who must be on the roads, officials recommend carrying a winter travel kit containing:
- Water and non-perishable food
- First aid supplies
- Blankets and extra warm clothing
