EDISON, NJ – A massive tanker truck explosion and fire killed one person and left another seriously injured Sunday morning, forcing the complete closure of Interstate 287 in Middlesex County.
Fatal Collision Sparks Massive Fire
According to New Jersey State Police, the incident occurred when a Jeep SUV struck the rear of a Volvo tractor-trailer pulling a fuel tanker. The truck was carrying approximately 8,000 gallons of fuel at the time of the impact.
The collision caused the tractor, the fuel trailer, and the Jeep to become fully engulfed in flames. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, while a passenger from the same vehicle was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Major Highway Closures And Emergency Response
The explosion sent thick, black smoke into the sky that was visible for miles, prompting a massive emergency response. More than 150 firefighters from surrounding towns were dispatched to battle the intense fuel fire.
The scale of the blaze forced authorities to shut down both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-287 near Exits 1 and 2 for several hours. Additionally, Route 27 was completely closed to traffic between Vineyard Road and Bridge Street as crews worked to contain the scene.
Investigation Ongoing
The identity of the deceased driver has not yet been released by officials, pending family notification. State Police have launched a full investigation to determine exactly what led to the initial crash.
