DHS Identifies Suspect in Deadly Austin Bar Shooting as FBI Probes Possible Terror Link

A tragic shooting in downtown Austin has left two people dead and more than a dozen injured, as federal authorities investigate whether the attack may be connected to terrorism.

Suspect Identified by DHS

The Department of Homeland Security has identified the gunman as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, who was killed by police at the scene.

The shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday, March 1, at Buford’s bar on West 6th Street — a busy nightlife area in Austin, Texas.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed that a male suspect was shot and killed by officers responding to the incident. No additional suspects have been identified.

What Authorities Have Revealed So Far

According to law enforcement officials, the suspect was allegedly wearing clothing with religious and political references at the time of the attack. Investigators also reportedly found materials in his vehicle that may indicate a possible ideological motive.

The FBI stated during a press conference that it is investigating the shooting as a potential act of terrorism.

“It’s still too early to determine an exact motivation,” said Alex Dorn, acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Antonio Field Office. “However, there were indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that suggest a potential nexus to terrorism.”

Immigration and Citizenship History

Federal officials said the suspect entered the United States in 2000 on a B-2 tourist visa. After marrying a U.S. citizen, he became a lawful permanent resident six years later and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2013.

Authorities have not yet publicly detailed any prior criminal record.

Timeline of the Attack

Emergency crews received the first 911 call at 1:59 a.m., and first responders were on the scene within 57 seconds, according to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

Officials reported:

  • 17 total patients treated at the scene
  • 14 transported to local hospitals
  • More than 20 EMS units responded
  • All critical patients transported within 24 minutes
  • Scene cleared within 47 minutes

Three surviving victims remain in critical condition.

Heightened Tensions Under Investigation

The attack occurred one day after escalating military tensions overseas involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Authorities have not confirmed any direct link but are examining all potential connections.

Police urged residents and visitors to avoid the West 6th Street area during the immediate aftermath of the incident.

Investigation Ongoing

Federal and local authorities continue to analyze evidence, including items recovered from the suspect’s vehicle and digital records, to determine motive and whether the attack was ideologically driven.

Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and that conclusions about motive have not yet been finalized.

More updates are expected as the FBI and local agencies continue their review of this developing case.
