Bloomfield Township, Michigan – A suspected attacker is dead and a synagogue security guard was injured after a violent incident involving a vehicle crash and gunfire at a suburban Detroit synagogue on Thursday, according to law enforcement officials.
Authorities say the incident occurred at Temple Israel in Bloomfield Township, where a suspect drove a vehicle into the building before security personnel confronted the attacker.
Officials confirmed that the suspect died during the confrontation, though investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of death.
“Security did engage the suspect with gunfire,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard during a press briefing.
Vehicle Crashed Into Synagogue Building
According to investigators, the suspect drove a vehicle through the doors of the synagogue and into the hallway of the building.
Authorities said the individual appeared to be moving through the building with clear intent before security intervened.
During the incident, the vehicle reportedly caught fire inside the building, prompting an emergency response from law enforcement and fire crews.
Officials said the suspect was “traveling with purpose” through the building when security confronted him.
Security Guard Injured During Incident
Law enforcement officials said a synagogue security guard was struck by the suspect’s vehicle during the attack.
The injured guard was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities said the guard is expected to recover. No other injuries were reported.
Early Learning Center Inside Building
Temple Israel also houses an early learning center for children, which raised immediate concerns after the incident.
However, officials confirmed that all children and staff were accounted for and safe.
Authorities said there were no reported injuries involving children or school staff inside the synagogue.
Bomb Units and Federal Agents Respond
Following the attack, law enforcement teams secured the area while investigators examined the suspect’s vehicle.
Officials said bomb technicians and multiple explosive-detection dogs were deployed as a precaution to ensure there were no additional threats.
Authorities said the vehicle was being cleared for possible explosives out of an abundance of caution.
Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also responded to assist with the investigation.
Officials Investigating Possible Motive
At this stage, investigators say the suspect has not yet been identified, and officials have not confirmed a motive for the attack.
Police initially responded to reports of an active shooter situation, though authorities later clarified that the suspect had driven into the building before an exchange of gunfire occurred.
