Driver Taken Into Custody After 80-Mile Pursuit Along Highway 50

RANCHO CORDOVA, CALIFORNIA — A driver was taken into custody Thursday morning following a high-speed pursuit that began in Rancho Cordova and extended more than 80 miles along Highway 50 into the South Lake Tahoe area, authorities said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the chase, which temporarily closed a portion of Highway 50 near Meyers.

Traffic Stop Attempt Sparks Early Morning Pursuit

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop around 4 a.m. at the intersection of Folsom Boulevard and Florin Perkins Road in Rancho Cordova.

The sheriff’s office contracts police services for the city.

Sgt. Ed Igoe stated that the driver failed to stop, prompting deputies to initiate a pursuit.

Chase Moves Onto Highway 50 Toward Sierra

The pursuit moved eastbound onto Highway 50, heading toward the Sierra Nevada.

When the vehicle crossed into El Dorado County, the California Highway Patrol assumed control of the pursuit.

CHP officers followed the suspect vehicle over Echo Summit before the driver eventually stopped near the intersection of Highway 50 and South Upper Truckee Road, just west of Meyers.

Arrest in South Lake Tahoe Area

CHP Officer Ruth Loehr, spokesperson for the CHP’s South Lake Tahoe office, confirmed that the suspect, who was driving a white sedan, was taken into custody around 8:45 a.m.

Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the driver or provide details about potential charges.

Multiple Agencies Assist

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department assisted with the response near the final stop location.

A section of Highway 50 near Meyers was temporarily closed Thursday morning while law enforcement secured the area. Vehicles were turned around to avoid the closure before the roadway was later reopened.
