ST. CHARLES PARISH, LA – A 40-year-old man faces multiple charges after a reckless driving investigation led to a foot pursuit, a swamp jump, and a violent alligator attack.
The Initial Traffic Stop
The incident began on Sunday, June 7, when Louisiana State Police received reports of a Toyota Supra driving recklessly on Interstate 10. The vehicle had reportedly struck a concrete barrier and suffered a tire blowout before troopers managed to pull it over on Interstate 310 in St. Charles Parish.
While interviewing the driver, identified as Victor M. Rivas, troopers observed clear signs of impairment. During the DWI investigation, Rivas unexpectedly fled on foot and jumped from the elevated highway straight into the swamp below.
Alligator Attack During Second Flight
With help from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, authorities tracked Rivas to U.S. Highway 61. However, as law enforcement approached, Rivas fled into a swampy area for a second time.
While hiding in the swamp, Rivas was attacked by an alligator, sustaining injuries to both of his arms. Despite being bitten, he continued to run. Police ultimately utilized drone technology to pinpoint his location in the dense brush and take him into custody.
Charges Filed
Rivas was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his alligator bite injuries. Following his release, he faces several charges including:
- Operating a vehicle while impaired (DWI)
- Resisting an officer
- Hit-and-run
- Careless operation of a motor vehicle
State Police issued a statement following the arrest, reminding motorists that impaired driving can lead to highly unpredictable and dangerous consequences.
