LOS ANGELES, CA – Roughly 100 federal agents and police officers in tactical vehicles swarmed MacArthur Park on Wednesday night, targeting open-air drug markets in the latest phase of an ongoing law enforcement blitz.
“Operation Free MacArthur Park”
The nighttime sweep was executed by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in partnership with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Dubbed “Operation Free MacArthur Park,” the multi-agency initiative aims to permanently eradicate rampant drug dealing and public fentanyl use from downtown LA’s historic greenspace.
According to Anthony Chrysanthis, head of the DEA’s Los Angeles office, this latest push specifically targets active drug users on the ground. This comes after previous raids successfully dismantled the upper narco-gang leadership and major suppliers of methamphetamine and fentanyl in the area.
The Enforcement Strategy
Wednesday’s operation marks the third massive sweep since the crackdown began earlier this month. Authorities are maintaining constant pressure to reclaim the park for the public.
Previous enforcement actions under the operation include:
- June 4 (Initial Sweep): Resulted in 13 arrests and six citations within a single hour.
- Second Sweep: Resulted in six felony arrests, two misdemeanor charges, and nine citations.
Officials note the strategy is already yielding significant results. Undercover agents tracking the area reported being completely unable to purchase illegal narcotics in certain sections of the park due to the heavy law enforcement presence.
Reclaiming A Historic Space
Dating back more than a century, MacArthur Park was originally envisioned as Los Angeles’ answer to the Champs-Élysées. However, it fell into severe decline during the 1980s and 1990s due to gang territory battles, including the notorious 18th Street Gang, whose local leadership was targeted by LAPD earlier this March.
DEA officials emphasized their long-term commitment to keeping the pressure on. “We want the criminals to know that it doesn’t matter when you go, we can show up and we can control the park whenever need be,” Chrysanthis stated.
