Severe Storms And 34 MPH Gusts Threaten Cincinnati Region

CINCINNATI, OH – Greater Cincinnati is bracing for severe thunderstorms and damaging winds late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, prompting local utility crews to prepare for potential power outages.

Timing and Wind Threat

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, surface wind speeds will rise gradually throughout the day, with gusts expected to exceed 20 mph by late afternoon. The most intense winds are forecasted for late evening and overnight, with gusts potentially reaching up to 34 mph.

The NWS has issued a hazardous weather outlook, warning that showers and thunderstorms will develop in the late afternoon before moving southeast across the region overnight.

Severe Weather Risks

Meteorologist John Franks noted that Cincinnati’s weather will be triggered by stronger storm systems moving out of central Indiana. While damaging straight-line winds remain the primary threat, the official outlook warns that the area could also experience:

  • Large hail
  • Localized flash flooding
  • Isolated tornadoes

Rainfall amounts between a quarter and a half-inch are possible overnight, with higher totals expected in areas hit by direct thunderstorms.

In anticipation of fallen trees and downed power lines, Duke Energy confirmed they are actively preparing for damaging conditions. The company stated that technicians and tree clearing crews are on standby to respond to outages as quickly as safety allows.
