Clayton County, Georgia — A 78-year-old Georgia man is on trial for allegedly shooting and killing his best friend of three decades during a dispute over $30, with prosecutors arguing the act was intentional and the defense claiming it was a tragic accident.
Joe Link, 78, faces charges of malice murder, felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with the October 2023 death of Coybern Jones Jr., 68.
The two men had reportedly been close friends for 30 years before their relationship ended in violence.
Argument at Gas Station Turned Deadly
According to prosecutors, Link and Jones met at an Exxon gas station in Jonesboro to settle a small debt. Link had allegedly loaned Jones $30 and allowed him to borrow a firearm.
Authorities say the men argued inside the station about the money before the confrontation spilled outside onto a nearby roadway close to a cemetery.
Jones was later found lying in the road on the evening of Oct. 30, 2023, dead from a gunshot wound to the neck.
Investigators recovered the weapon — described in court as a .22 revolver known as a “Saturday night special” — about 36 feet from the body, positioned in front of a grave marker.
Link was arrested days later and charged with murder.
Prosecution: “Not an Accident”
Assistant District Attorney Brianna Jordan told jurors that the evidence will show the shooting was intentional.
Prosecutors argue the fatal gunshot was “not an accident” and stemmed directly from the dispute over money.
The state maintains that the confrontation escalated and Link deliberately pulled the trigger.
Defense: Gun Fired During Struggle
Link’s defense attorney, Erin King, presented a different narrative in court.
According to the defense, there was a “tussle” over the firearm, and the gun discharged during the struggle, fatally striking Jones.
King said Link was in shock after the shooting and left the scene, walking away while his longtime friend lay bleeding on the ground.
During testimony, a firearms examiner from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation stated that the revolver was manufactured before 1968.
When asked whether such a weapon could discharge without force applied to the trigger, the examiner responded:
“That’s correct.”
The defense is expected to rely heavily on that testimony to argue the shooting may have been accidental.
Longtime Friendship Ends in Tragedy
