Portland, Oregon — Five teenagers are now facing serious felony charges in connection with the death of a Portland minister who was shot multiple times while trying to protect his young grandson during a violent home invasion.
Authorities confirmed that Kevin Cooper, 56, died on Dec. 12, 2025, more than a month after he was critically injured in a shooting at his home in the 9300 block of Southeast Ramona Street around 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 1, 2025.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, detectives with the Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) spent months gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and tracking leads before identifying five suspects.
“They determined that five suspects invaded Mr. Cooper’s home and shot him in front of his family members,” police said in a Feb. 24 press release.
Family Says Suspects Pretended to Be Police
Cooper’s brother told local media that the suspects allegedly knocked on the door and claimed to be police officers before forcing their way inside.
Once inside, the suspects allegedly opened fire. Family members say Cooper was shielding his 4-year-old grandson when he was shot.
The father and minister later succumbed to his injuries after spending weeks in the hospital.

Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer emphasized accountability.
“We cannot tolerate this growing rate of violence among youth and young adults,” Palmer said. “Kevin Cooper should still be with his grandchildren, his wife, and his church.”
Remembered as a Devoted Minister and Family Man
Cooper served as a minister at People of Purpose Family Worship Center, where he was known for his dedication to his faith, family and community.
Loved ones say he was deeply committed to his grandchildren and stepped in without hesitation during the terrifying moments inside his home.
The arrests represent a major development in the months-long investigation, but for Cooper’s family, the loss remains immeasurable.
Police say the case is still active and encourage anyone with information to contact authorities and reference case number 25-299606.
