Richmond, Virginia — What was supposed to be one of the proudest moments of the year for graduating seniors quickly turned into chaos when a spectator allegedly rushed the stage and attacked a student during a Virginia high school graduation ceremony.
The shocking incident unfolded Wednesday morning during John Marshall High School’s graduation ceremony at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center, leaving families and students stunned.
Spectator Allegedly Attacks Student During Diploma Walk
According to authorities, the disturbance began just before 11 a.m. as students were crossing the stage to receive their diplomas.
Police identified 20-year-old Evan J. Williams Jr. as a suspect in the incident. He was arrested Thursday and charged with disorderly conduct and damage to private property.
A viral video circulating online captured the moment violence erupted. The brief clip shows several individuals suddenly engaging in a fight near the stage while graduates and audience members looked on in disbelief.
Witnesses watched as what should have been a celebration quickly transformed into confusion and panic.
Officers Rush to Break Up the Fight
The video shows multiple officers immediately responding as the altercation escalated.
At least four university police officers can be seen rushing toward the stage area to separate those involved and restore order.
As officers attempted to stop the fight, other attendees reportedly became involved, while some audience members tried to assist authorities and others hurried to move away from the violence.
The initial confrontation was eventually broken up, but the disruption did not end there.
Additional Altercations Reported Outside Venue
Authorities said several additional confrontations broke out outside the Siegel Center after the initial fight.
Law enforcement officers worked to clear the venue and prevent further incidents from escalating.
Despite the chaotic scenes, officials confirmed that no weapons were involved and no injuries were reported.
VCU Police Maj. Nicole Dailey said more than 50 officers from both the Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department and the Richmond Police Department responded to help manage the situation.
Three additional individuals were also detained during the disturbances, according to authorities.
Police Increase Security Following Incident
Following the disruption, Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said officers were deployed to parking structures and surrounding areas to help ensure attendees could leave safely.
“We don’t want to see the retaliation continue,” Edwards said.
Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage from inside and outside the venue to determine exactly what led to the violence.
Authorities have indicated that additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
School Superintendent Condemns Behavior
Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras strongly criticized the actions of those responsible for disrupting the ceremony.
“Whatever acrimony, whatever concerns you may have with anybody in the community, leave that at home, or don’t come to graduation,” Kamras said during a press conference.

Kamras praised law enforcement officers for their rapid response and confirmed that additional security measures have already been implemented for upcoming graduation ceremonies throughout the district.
Students’ Achievement Overshadowed by Violence
School leaders expressed disappointment that the disturbance diverted attention away from the accomplishments of the graduating class.
According to officials, John Marshall High School achieved a 100% graduation rate this year, a milestone administrators hoped would be the focus of the day’s celebrations.
Kamras urged community members to remember the students’ hard work and achievements rather than allowing the violence to define the event.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing evidence and identifying others who may have been involved.
