ELK GROVE, CA — What was meant to be a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony at Sky River Casino turned into a harrowing scene of near-disaster on Thursday. High winds caught a promotional hot air balloon, forcing an unplanned flight that sent the vessel into the side of a building and dangerously close to live power lines.
The Elk Grove Police Department confirmed that the incident occurred during the casino’s official groundbreaking for a new hotel resort expansion.
A Near-Miss with Disaster
Witnesses watched in shock as the balloon, meant to be a centerpiece for the festivities, was suddenly buffeted by “unexpected heavy winds.” The balloon was pulled into the air, striking the side of the casino structure before drifting toward a highway.
In a terrifying moment, the balloon also made contact with a power line. Despite the potential for a catastrophic electrical fire or crash, the pilot managed to navigate the vessel across the highway, eventually landing safely in a nearby field.
Pilot Safe: “Safety Protocols” Followed
Miraculously, no injuries were reported. The pilot, whose name has not been released, emerged from the landing unscathed.
Cindy Rodriguez, Public Relations Manager for Sky River Casino, addressed the situation in a formal statement:
“Due to unexpected heavy winds, the pilot chose to launch into free flight in accordance with safety protocols. The balloon and pilot landed safely.”
While the casino maintains the launch was a calculated safety move by the pilot to avoid being dragged on the ground, the impact with the building and utility lines has triggered a federal response.
Federal Investigation Launched
Because the incident involved contact with a building and power infrastructure, it is being treated as a serious aviation event. Local officials confirmed that both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and will be conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the flight.
Sky River Casino Expansion Moves Forward
The groundbreaking ceremony was intended to mark the start of a massive new phase for Sky River Casino, which includes a luxury hotel resort. Despite the balloon drama, the development is expected to proceed as planned, bringing hundreds of new rooms and amenities to the Elk Grove area.
Were you at Sky River Casino for the groundbreaking? Did you see the balloon take flight or catch a video of the landing? The Elk Grove community is talking about this incredible “unplanned” event.
