KOMATIPOORT, ZA – A grim recovery operation along the Komati River has turned into a broader police investigation after authorities discovered human remains and six pairs of shoes inside the stomach of a massive 1,100-pound crocodile.
The Disappearance of Gabriel Batista
The investigation began in April following the disappearance of 59-year-old Gabriel Batista, the well-known owner of the Border Country Inn. Batista went missing after his Ford Ranger became stranded and was swept downriver by rising floodwaters at a local river crossing.
Following a week-long search, the South African Police Service and rescue teams spotted a 15-foot apex predator sunbathing on the riverbank—just 150 meters (nearly 500 feet) from where Batista was last seen.
High-Risk Airlift and Discovery
Because crocodiles require sunlight and heat to digest large meals, authorities suspected the predator had found Batista. Due to the dangerous, crocodile-infested waters, officials euthanized the animal before a helicopter crew executed a high-risk rope extraction to airlift the 1,100-pound reptile for an autopsy.
DNA analysis has since confirmed that human remains found inside the stomach belong to Batista.
A Developing Investigation
The autopsy revealed a chilling secondary discovery: six pairs of shoes were also lodged inside the crocodile’s digestive tract.
Local police are now aggressively investigating whether the predator is linked to other unsolved missing persons cases in the region. As of June 2026, authorities have not officially confirmed the identities or origins connected to the clothing items found.
