LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles County officials are launching a zero-tolerance enforcement campaign against illegal street takeovers this Fourth of July holiday weekend, warning participants of steep fines and vehicle impoundments.
Steep Penalties For Violators
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) announced Friday that anyone caught participating in, organizing, or promoting a street takeover will face a $1,000 fine.
Despite a recent increase in penalties, these illegal gatherings continue to pose severe safety risks. Sheriff Robert Luna warned that even if drivers or spectators are not arrested on the spot, detectives will use video footage and social media to trace and hold them accountable afterward.
Recent Rise In Takeover Violence
The holiday crackdown follows a series of recent dangerous incidents across the region:
- East Los Angeles: Hundreds gathered on Whittier Boulevard earlier this week. The celebration devolved into a takeover with cars doing donuts, resulting in two arrests and injuries to three deputies.
- Carson: Last Sunday, a shooting near a street takeover left one man dead and six others injured.
- Santa Ana: Crowds damaged property by rocking cars and climbing onto new city streetcar stations during a separate incident.
A Positive Downward Trend
County data shows that targeted enforcement is making an impact. Street takeovers in unincorporated areas and contract cities declined 33% between 2024 and 2025, and dropped a total of 53% by the first quarter of 2026.
LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell emphasized that the county’s message for the busy summer season is clear: these reckless events are entirely preventable, and anyone involved will face accountability. Officials urge the public to immediately report any active or planned takeover events to local law enforcement.
