Lifeguard Runs Over Sunbather At Half Moon Bay Beach

HALF MOON BAY, CA – An afternoon of relaxation turned into a terrifying ordeal when an on-duty lifeguard drove an official patrol vehicle over a woman resting on the sand at Francis Beach.

The Incident at Francis Beach

The accident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday along a busy stretch of Half Moon Bay State Beach near Kelly Avenue. According to California State Parks spokesperson Adeline Yee, a 20-year-old woman was sunbathing on the sand when she was struck by the state vehicle.

First responders, including San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies, Coastside Fire crews, and State Park peace officers, rushed to the scene. The victim was treated directly on the sand before being transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Fortunately, authorities confirmed her injuries are not life-threatening.

Driver Distraction Under Investigation

While a formal investigation remains active, law enforcement officials are currently focusing heavily on driver error.

“Initial reports indicated the driver may have been distracted,” the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office stated following the incident.

A Dangerous Summer On The Coast

This accident at Francis Beach—a highly popular spot featuring a campground and visitor center—comes amidst a string of recent coastal tragedies in Northern California.

Earlier this summer on June 10, a powerful ocean swell swept away two college students who were napping on the sand at nearby Panther Beach in Santa Cruz, resulting in both losing their lives. Authorities continue to urge extreme caution for all beachgoers this season.
