A Cranston man has been arrested and charged following a deadly hit-and-run that claimed the life of a woman early Sunday morning in Cranston, according to local authorities.
Police and fire crews were dispatched around 4:15 a.m. to the 500 block of Scituate Avenue after a 911 call reported a pedestrian had been struck. Officials said the call came from an Amazon employee who discovered the woman lying in the roadway and immediately alerted emergency services.
Victim Pronounced Dead at the Scene
When first responders arrived, they found the woman with severe injuries. Investigators said she had been thrown approximately 42 feet from the point of impact. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are continuing efforts to positively identify the victim and notify her family, which had not yet been completed as of the latest update.
Driver Initially Believed He Hit an Object
About an hour after the initial emergency call, police received additional information from a Cranston resident. According to investigators, the resident reported that 30-year-old Richard D’Amico told him he believed he had struck a deer or another object while driving on Scituate Avenue earlier that morning.
Officers later located the pickup truck D’Amico was driving at his residence. Police said the vehicle showed damage consistent with the fatal crash, prompting further investigation.
Evidence Leads to Arrest Warrant
After conducting interviews, reviewing license plate reader data, and examining physical evidence, authorities determined the truck was involved in the deadly collision. Investigators also concluded that the crash had not been reported to police, as required by law.
An arrest warrant was issued, and D’Amico turned himself in to police around 7 p.m. Sunday. He has been charged with duty to stop in an accident resulting in death.
Court Appearance and Ongoing Investigation
D’Amico was arraigned and released on a $5,000 surety bail. He is scheduled to return to court on April 1. Officials said it was not immediately clear whether he has retained legal representation.
The crash remains under active investigation. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information to contact the Cranston Police Department at 401-942-2211. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by texting “CRANSTONPD” to 847411.
