Lockesburg, Arkansas – A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of an 8-month-old baby in Sevier County, authorities confirmed. The case, which began earlier this month as a medical emergency, has now been officially classified as a homicide.
According to the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified on February 5 about an unresponsive infant in Lockesburg. Emergency responders transported the baby to Sevier County Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigation Began at Hospital
Following the infant’s death, investigators responded directly to the hospital to begin examining the circumstances surrounding the case. Authorities stated that the baby’s body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for a full autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
After reviewing preliminary findings and continuing the investigation, officials were informed that the infant’s death was being classified as a homicide. Law enforcement officers then intensified efforts to identify any individuals responsible.
Arrest of Suspect
During the course of the investigation, authorities identified Edward Scott Jr., 31, as a suspect in the case. On February 12, deputies arrested Scott and booked him into the Sevier County Jail.
He is currently facing a charge of first-degree murder. Officials have not released additional details regarding the circumstances that led to the child’s death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Law enforcement has not disclosed whether the suspect had a specific relationship to the child. Further information may be released as court proceedings move forward.
Community Impact and Recent Child Death Cases
The tragic death of the 8-month-old marks the third killing of a young child in Sevier County within approximately one year. The repeated incidents have deeply affected the local community and first responders.
In January 2025, 6-year-old Luxton Perez was killed in De Queen. Authorities reported that his stepfather was responsible for the child’s death.
Just two months later, in March 2025, 2-year-old Ava Ann Marie Tabor died in Lockesburg after reportedly being beaten. Nineteen-year-old Wesley Davis was arrested in connection with that case.
The series of cases involving young children has brought renewed attention to child safety and protective measures within the region. Community members have expressed concern over the frequency of such incidents and the lasting emotional toll on families and emergency personnel.
Support for First Responders
Officials confirmed that counseling services were made available to first responders who were involved in the previous child death cases in Sevier County. The emotional impact of responding to incidents involving children can be significant, and local agencies have emphasized the importance of mental health support for law enforcement, EMS personnel, and medical staff.
As the latest investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to cooperate with law enforcement.
Edward Scott Jr. remains in custody as the legal process moves forward. No additional charges have been announced at this time.
