MOUNT HOLLY, NJ – Mount Holly Township officials and local police announced Monday the complete cancellation of the 2026 Independence Day Celebration due to a rising wave of teenage violence at regional community events.
The decision comes despite this year marking America’s milestone 250th anniversary.
Public Safety Concerns Force Cancellation
In a joint statement, township officials and the police department revealed they have been meticulously monitoring New Jersey events over the past few months. The assessment tracked rising violence, property destruction, and the heavy security protocols other towns have been forced to implement.
Last year’s free celebration in Burlington County featured live music, food vendors, and carnival rides. However, officials stated they are taking no chances this year, prioritizing the safety of spectators and vendors above all else.
A Pattern of Regional Disruptions
The cancellation follows at least three major violent incidents in Burlington County since May:
- Maple Shade (May 1): A large group of teenagers disrupted the Maple Shade Tigers Youth Football Carnival, forcing organizers to cancel the event’s second day and ruining fundraising efforts.
- Medford (Mid-May): Officials at the Saint Mary of the Lakes Carnival had to deploy drones, restrict entrances, and bring in outside police agencies just to maintain order.
- Florence Township (May 27): Multiple fights broke out on the opening night of the Roebling Carnival. Officers were overwhelmed, resulting in the arrest of four teenage girls (ages 14 to 16) and a 20-year-old. One police officer was injured and hospitalized during the chaos.
Officials Stand By Decision
Florence Township police previously warned about how quickly these gatherings escalate into large-scale fights and unruly behavior.
Recognizing the community’s disappointment, Mount Holly officials expressed their gratitude to long-time supporters but reiterated that the defensive measure is strictly necessary to ensure public safety.
