Man Dies After Violent Bodega Beating—Father and Son Now Facing Murder Charges

Brooklyn, New York — A violent late-night attack inside a Brooklyn bodega has led to murder charges against a father and son accused of brutally assaulting a 60-year-old man before robbing him, according to police and prosecutors.

The shocking case has rattled the Crown Heights community after authorities revealed disturbing details about the deadly confrontation.

Father and Son Charged in Deadly Attack

According to the NYPD, Devon Johnson, 47, and Devon Johnson, 18, surrendered to police on Monday in connection with the fatal robbery that occurred on April 22.

The pair now faces charges including murder, manslaughter, and robbery following the death of Derrick Watson, 60.

Police say the attack happened inside a bodega located at 1380 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights around 12:30 a.m.

Investigators allege the suspects violently assaulted Watson before stealing his belongings and fleeing the scene.

Prosecutors Describe Brutal Assault

According to prosecutors, the father and son allegedly punched and kicked Watson in the face before stomping on his head during the robbery.

Authorities claim the suspects then took off with a wad of cash and the victim’s wallet.

The criminal complaint states that Watson suffered a traumatic brain injury, and his heart reportedly stopped the same night as the attack.

Although emergency responders rushed him to the hospital, the injuries proved too severe.

Watson later died from those injuries on May 4, nearly two weeks after the violent assault.

Police Say Suspects Knew the Victim

Investigators revealed that the suspects allegedly knew Watson prior to the attack, though police have not clarified the exact nature of their relationship.

Authorities also stated that it does not appear either the suspects or the victim worked at the deli where the attack took place.

The motive behind the violence remains unclear, and detectives continue investigating what may have triggered the deadly encounter.

Suspects Plead Not Guilty

Following their arrests, both defendants appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

Court records show the father and son are currently being held without bail after their arraignments.

Attorneys representing the suspects reportedly could not be reached for comment following the court proceedings.
