Mandatory Evacuations Ordered As 14,000-Acre Wildfire Scorches Canyon

CANYON, TX – A fast-moving grass fire triggered mandatory evacuations in Randall County after lightning strikes ignited a massive blaze on Thursday afternoon.

Evacuation Zones Enforced

The Hunggate Fire has rapidly expanded, forcing local officials to order immediate evacuations for residents in high-risk zones. The mandatory evacuation orders are currently in place for:

  • Areas near Chaparral Villas in the Canyon area
  • Neighborhoods near 13th Avenue in Randall County

Emergency officials are urging all residents inside these zones to leave immediately and advising the public to completely avoid the affected areas to keep roads clear for first responders.

Rapid Spread and Low Containment

The fire erupted after a storm cell moved across the region, producing dry lightning that sparked multiple grass fires. Fueled by dry conditions, the blaze quickly scorched more than 14,000 acres.

As of the latest update from fire officials, the Hunggate Fire is only 10% contained. Numerous structures and homes in the area remain under direct threat.

Emergency Response Underway

Crews from the Texas A&M Forest Service alongside multiple local fire departments are on the ground battling the flames. Heavy smoke has significantly reduced visibility on nearby roadways, and Texas State Rangers are assisting with traffic control.

The Hunggate Fire is reportedly one of three separate wildfires that broke out across Texas on Thursday due to the severe weather cell.

Elevated Fire Risk Warning

With extremely dry conditions persisting across the Texas Panhandle, authorities are asking the public to exercise extreme caution. To prevent additional blazes, residents are strictly urged to avoid outdoor burning, parking vehicles on dry grass, or pulling towing chains that could create accidental sparks.
