Perryton, Texas — A Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after admitting to the killing of a 4-year-old girl whose body was discovered by firefighters responding to a house fire.
Authorities say the tragic case began in July 2022, when emergency crews arrived at a home in Perryton to battle a fire — only to make a horrifying discovery inside.
The victim, Hope Raley, was found dead in a bedroom, and investigators later determined she had been strangled to death.
Firefighters made grim discovery while battling house fire
According to reports from local authorities, firefighters were called to a residence in Perryton after a fire broke out at the home.
While searching the property during the emergency response, crews discovered the body of the young child inside the house.
Investigators later determined that Hope Raley had died from strangulation, and the fire response quickly turned into a homicide investigation.

Suspect found hiding in crawl space inside home

Authorities found Humberto Martinez hiding in a crawl space inside the home, according to investigators.
He was taken into custody shortly afterward and arrested the following day in connection with the case.
Suspect initially arrested for arson
According to local officials, Martinez was initially arrested on second-degree felony arson charges related to the house fire.
As investigators continued gathering evidence, prosecutors later upgraded the charges.
In September 2022, Martinez was formally charged with capital murder of a child under the age of 10, one of the most serious criminal charges under Texas law.

“Martinez will never again know life as a free man,” Ochiltree County Attorney Joe Meraz said following the sentencing.
