Scottsbluff, Nebraska — A bizarre accident in Nebraska has left a woman injured after police say a dog accidentally triggered a loaded shotgun inside a parked vehicle over Memorial Day weekend.
Authorities say the unusual incident happened Saturday afternoon outside a convenience store in Scottsbluff and remains under investigation.
Dog Allegedly Triggered Loaded Shotgun
According to the Scottsbluff Police Department, officers were initially dispatched around 12:07 p.m. after receiving reports that someone had been shot with a BB gun.
However, while officers were still en route, dispatchers received updated information indicating the incident actually involved a shotgun.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered a truck with an attached camper parked outside the convenience store. Investigators noticed damage to the passenger-side door that appeared consistent with a shotgun blast.
Police later determined that the truck’s owner had left the vehicle parked while going inside the store.
Woman Injured at Nearby Traffic Light
Authorities say a dog sitting in the back seat accidentally moved across the vehicle and triggered the shotgun, which allegedly had a live shell already loaded in the chamber.
The firearm discharged unexpectedly, sending gunfire through the truck and striking a woman nearby.
According to investigators, the victim was stopped at a traffic light close to the convenience store when she was hit in the arm by the accidental blast.
Thankfully, officials said her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
A family member transported the woman to Regional West Medical Center for treatment shortly after the incident.
Police confirmed that the truck’s owner was not inside the vehicle when the shotgun fired.

Following the shocking accident, authorities used the incident to remind gun owners about the importance of properly securing firearms.
“The Scottsbluff Police Department reminds the public that per Nebraska State Statute, it is illegal to travel with a loaded shotgun in a vehicle,” a department spokesperson said.

“This incident also serves as an important reminder that firearm safety is of the utmost importance when handling, possessing, transporting, or maintaining any type of firearm.”

“While they were responding, they were informed that a dog had jumped up onto the bed, causing the shotgun to go off, which ultimately struck the male,” Cpl. Michael Schoone with the Shillington Police Department said at the time.
The victim survived after being transported to a hospital for surgery.
