CARROLLTON, Texas — A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed Monday night during what police say was an attempted armed robbery in Carrollton, after a 20-year-old man fired in self-defense.
According to a news release from the Carrollton Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. to the 2200 block of Heads Lane following a report of a weapon-related incident. A short time later, a woman contacted authorities to report that her teenage son had been shot.
The boy, whose name has not been released, was transported to Carrollton Regional Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said.
Police say robbery was planned in advance
Investigators determined that the 16-year-old victim traveled to Carrollton with four other juveniles — John Avila, 17; Markellin Soto, 17; and two 15-year-old girls — to meet Adan Sandoval, 20. Police say the meeting was arranged under the pretense of selling illegal substances, but the group allegedly intended to rob Sandoval.
During the encounter, the 16-year-old reportedly brandished a firearm, prompting Sandoval to shoot him in what police described as an act of self-defense.
Charges filed against other suspects
Following the investigation, Avila, Soto, and one of the 15-year-old girls were each charged with aggravated robbery, according to police. Authorities did not specify whether the second 15-year-old girl would face charges.
As of Thursday, Sandoval had not been charged in connection with the shooting. Police emphasized that the case remains under review, and additional information may be released as the investigation continues.
Ongoing investigation
The Carrollton Police Department stated that detectives are still reviewing evidence and witness statements to determine whether any further charges are warranted.
Anyone with additional information related to the incident is encouraged to contact Carrollton police as the investigation remains active.
