NYPD Officer Shoots Aggressive Raccoon on NYC Boardwalk, Placed on Modified Duty

Rockaway Beach, New York– A New York City police officer has been placed on modified duty after fatally shooting a raccoon that allegedly charged at people on a public boardwalk in Rockaway Beach.

Incident Details

The incident occurred at around 7:45 a.m. on Thursday after a 911 call reported a vicious and aggressive animal on the boardwalk, according to a statement released by the New York Police Department on Monday.

Officers responding to the call attempted to guide the raccoon away from the crowded boardwalk and into a safer area. During the effort, authorities say the animal suddenly charged toward people, prompting one officer to discharge his firearm.

“An officer fired his weapon, striking the animal,” an NYPD spokesperson said.
“No civilians were injured during the incident.”

Investigation Underway

The officer involved has not been publicly identified. As per NYPD protocol, the case is now under review by the department’s Force Investigation Division, which examines incidents involving the discharge of a police weapon.

The officer has been placed on modified duty while the investigation continues.

Rabies Testing Unclear

As of Monday, officials had not confirmed whether the raccoon will be tested for rabies, a common concern in cases involving aggressive wildlife behavior.

Public Safety Concerns

Encounters between wildlife and residents have become more frequent in urban areas, raising ongoing concerns about public safety, animal control protocols, and officer response methods in non-criminal incidents.

Authorities have not announced whether any policy changes or additional training measures will follow the review.
