Spring Valley, California — A California man who prosecutors say carefully planned the murder of his estranged wife by taking a vacation day from work and driving hundreds of miles to find her has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case centers on the killing of 29-year-old Ericka J. Wilson, who was fatally attacked outside her Spring Valley home in January 2022.
Prosecutors Say Attack Was Planned in Advance
According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, 34-year-old Kandynn Wilson traveled from Oakland to Spring Valley with the intent of locating and killing his estranged wife.
Investigators determined that Kandynn took a “vacation day” from work before making the approximately 500-mile journey.
Authorities said he initially went to a location he mistakenly believed was Ericka’s workplace. After realizing he was at the wrong place, he reportedly drove to her residence and waited for her arrival.
Prosecutors described the actions as a calculated effort to track down the victim before launching the deadly attack.
Victim Ambushed Outside Her Home
According to investigators, Kandynn hid inside his vehicle in the parking lot near Ericka’s residence and waited.
When Ericka arrived home and exited her vehicle, authorities say he attacked her without warning.
The District Attorney’s Office said Kandynn assaulted her with “vicious brutality”, stabbing her 23 times in the neck.
The attack occurred in broad daylight outside her home and quickly drew the attention of nearby residents.
Ericka, who shared a child with Kandynn, died from her injuries. According to her obituary, she passed away on Jan. 28, 2022.
Neighbor Tried to Stop the Attack
A neighbor witnessed the violent assault and attempted to intervene.
According to prosecutors, the witness grabbed a bat and chased Kandynn during the attack, forcing him to flee the scene.

Authorities said the suspect left behind critical evidence while escaping, including his vehicle, a glove and the murder weapon.

Suspect Found Covered in Victim’s Blood
Law enforcement officers launched a search for Kandynn after the stabbing and located him several hours later.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, he was found covered in Ericka’s blood when police took him into custody.
The evidence collected during the investigation later became a key component of the prosecution’s case.
Following a trial, a jury convicted Kandynn in December 2025 of first-degree murder with a lying in wait special circumstance.
Judge Hands Down Life Sentence
This week, Kandynn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional year behind bars.
The case has drawn attention as another example of the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
District Attorney Summer Stephan addressed the broader impact of the tragedy in a statement following the sentencing.
“Intimate partner violence continues to be one of the most common and dangerous forms of violence we confront, and this case is a stark reminder of its devastating impact,” Stephan said.
She added, “We must keep fighting to safeguard victims of domestic violence and hold their abusers accountable.”
The case has left a family grieving the loss of a young mother and serves as a reminder of the serious dangers that can arise in domestic violence situations.
