Boise, Idaho – Residents across southwest Idaho could face difficult travel conditions through the weekend as strong winds and a developing storm system bring gusty weather and mountain snowfall to the region.
Meteorologists say wind gusts up to 45 mph are already sweeping across parts of the Treasure Valley, with even stronger winds possible as a cold front approaches later this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday for much of southwest Idaho.
Forecasters say sustained west winds between 20 and 30 mph with stronger gusts could push vehicles and blow debris across roadways.
Strongest Winds Expected Across Treasure Valley
Communities across the Treasure Valley may experience the strongest winds during the afternoon hours.
Cities expected to see the highest gusts include:
- Boise
- Nampa
- Caldwell
- Meridian
- Ontario, Oregon
Officials say the gusty winds could create challenges for lightweight or high-profile vehicles, especially on exposed roadways.
Drivers are urged to remain cautious as wind gusts may affect vehicle control.
Rain in Valleys, Snow in the Mountains
The incoming storm system will also bring scattered rain showers to lower elevations, while mountain regions receive accumulating snowfall.
Forecasters expect precipitation totals of about 0.25 to 0.50 inches across parts of southwest Idaho.
Higher elevation communities, including Cascade, McCall, Stanley, and areas around the Sawtooth Mountains, could see several inches of snow through the weekend.
Mountain areas are likely to receive the heaviest precipitation as the storm system moves into the region.
Stronger Winds Expected Saturday
Meteorologists say conditions could worsen Saturday afternoon as a strong cold front moves across Idaho.
A High Wind Watch has been issued for Saturday, with forecast models indicating sustained winds between 30 and 40 mph.
Wind gusts could reach up to 55 mph, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions.
Officials say the strongest winds may affect major highways including Interstate 84 and U.S. Highway 20.
Blowing debris and crosswinds may make driving difficult, particularly in open areas.
