TROY, MI – Powerful storms slammed through Metro Detroit on Monday, unleashing destructive winds that ripped the roof off a local business, toppled power lines, and triggered major highway closures across multiple communities.
Roof Ripped Off Troy Auto Shop
In Troy, severe winds caused significant structural damage to an auto shop on John R Road. Nearby business owner Branislav Jovanov witnessed the moment the storm struck, describing a sudden, violent gust of wind accompanied by blinding rain.
“I saw this thing flying through the foggy, thick rain,” Jovanov said. “I thought it was a tree, but the whole roof got blown off.”
The destruction left the shop’s interior exposed to the elements, causing heavy water damage to tools and equipment inside.
Downed Power Lines Block Major Roads
Just over a mile away from the auto shop, emergency crews scrambled to respond to widespread utility damage. Firefighters blocked off portions of Stephenson Highway and Maple Road after strong winds toppled live power lines into the roadway.
The travel disruptions extended into Plymouth, where Interstate 275 at Ann Arbor Road was completely shut down due to downed lines. The closure caused massive traffic backups for commuters throughout Monday afternoon, with state police redirecting vehicles away from the hazard.
Utica Neighborhoods Hit By Tree Damage
In Utica, homeowners faced similar chaos as old trees buckled under the pressure of the wind. Local resident Paul Weaver reported hearing a nearby power transmitter explode before finding a massive tree snapped in half on his front lawn.
The fallen tree landed directly on top of a parked vehicle. Despite the widespread property damage across the region, authorities have not reported any storm-related injuries.
Ongoing Clean-Up Operations
Utility crews and emergency personnel remain on the scene in multiple municipalities to clear debris and restore power. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution, treat all dark intersections as four-way stops, and avoid any downed wires.
