Los Angeles, California – Authorities have charged a suspected serial arsonist with murder after a devastating house fire in Hollywood killed two elderly sisters inside their longtime family home.
Prosecutors say the suspect is also linked to a series of other fires across the neighborhood, raising concerns about a broader pattern of arson in the area.
The fatal fire broke out early in the morning on February 4 at a home on Vista Del Mar Avenue near West Yucca Street, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Investigators say the suspect is facing two murder charges and multiple felony arson counts connected to the deadly blaze.
Sisters Trapped Inside Burning Home
Authorities identified the victims as Maria Del Consuelo Alarcon-Valdez, 76, and Yolanda Honda, 82.
Witnesses say Alarcon-Valdez briefly appeared on the front porch as flames spread through the house.
She reportedly told a neighbor, “I need to go back and get my sister,” before returning inside.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found both sisters trapped in the home.
Alarcon-Valdez was pronounced dead at the scene, while Honda was transported to a hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Suspect Arrested Same Day
Police arrested Jovan Lamar Duverne, 39, later that day in connection with the fire.
Prosecutors say Duverne has now been charged with:
- Two counts of murder
- Eleven counts of felony arson
Authorities believe he may have been responsible for setting at least 10 other fires in the Hollywood area.
Investigators say the suspect allegedly used a torch-style lighter to ignite fires in multiple locations.
Officials said he is currently being held without bail.
Suspect Could Face Death Penalty
According to prosecutors, the case includes a special circumstance allegation involving multiple murders, which could make the suspect eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
Court records also indicate Duverne previously had a prior arson conviction, which may increase potential sentencing.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing evidence connected to other fires in the area.
Family Remembers Sisters’ Close Bond
The tragedy has deeply affected the victims’ family and the surrounding community.

According to relatives, Alarcon-Valdez had recently undergone emergency hip surgery after a fall and was recovering at home. Her sister Honda had moved in to care for her full-time during the recovery process.
Family members described the sisters as deeply devoted to each other.
Search Continues for Missing Family Dog
Following the fire, relatives also began searching for Alarcon-Valdez’s beloved dog, Coco, who has not been found since the blaze.
Family members believe the dog may have escaped during the fire and have continued searching through shelters and community posts.
The family says finding Coco would mean “holding on to a living piece of what was lost.”
Authorities say the investigation into the fire and related incidents continues.
