KENWOOD, CHICAGO – A 38-year-old suburban man is in custody and facing murder charges following the deadly shooting of an apartment maintenance worker in Kenwood last month.

The Incident on South Drexel Boulevard

The shooting occurred on April 2 around 5:35 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 4500 block of South Drexel Boulevard. Chicago Police officers arrived at the scene to find 42-year-old Alonzo Johnson in the lobby suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest, shoulder, and hand.

Johnson, who was a well-known maintenance worker for the building and lived on the same block, was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead later that evening.

Dispute Led to Violence

According to witness statements provided to the police, the violence erupted after a resident of the building got into an argument with Johnson. The suspect reportedly left the lobby after the dispute, only to return a short time later with a firearm and open fire on the worker.

Chicago Police have identified the suspect as Gaddis Price Jr. He has been officially charged with:

  • First-Degree Murder
  • Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance

Price Jr. is expected to appear in bond court this Thursday to face these charges. Authorities have not released further details regarding the nature of the initial argument that led to the shooting.
