UNION, NJ — A violent and chaotic scene unfolded at a popular New Jersey fast-food restaurant on Saturday night, leaving one person dead and six others wounded. Authorities are currently searching for multiple suspects involved in what they describe as a “targeted” attack at the Chick-fil-A located on Route 22 in Union.
The Union County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that local police responded to emergency calls around 9:00 PM Saturday. Upon arrival, officers discovered seven victims suffering from gunshot wounds inside and around the premises.
The Investigation: A Targeted Act of Violence
While the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, investigators were quick to clarify that this was not a random act of violence. The Union County Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement to reassure the community:
“While no arrests have been made at this time, the preliminary investigation reveals this does not appear to be a random act of violence and that there is no immediate ongoing threat to the general public.”
Despite this, the suspects managed to flee the scene before police could apprehend them. Dashcam footage currently circulating on social media reportedly shows a figure running from the restaurant area holding what appears to be a firearm. Detectives are currently reviewing all available surveillance and mobile footage to identify the shooters.
Eyewitness Accounts: “Terror Behind the Counter”
The shooting occurred during a busy evening shift at the restaurant, which sits along one of Union County’s most heavily trafficked commercial corridors.
A witness, whose girlfriend was working at the time of the incident, told local reporters that the scene was horrifying. He described a group of men entering the store, bypassing the dining area, and going behind the counter to fire multiple shots. This detail has led many to believe the attackers were specifically looking for someone inside the staff or kitchen area.
Casualties and Aftermath
One victim, whose identity has not yet been released pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene. The six other victims were transported to local hospitals. Fortunately, authorities stated that their injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
Late into Saturday night, Route 22 was lined with emergency vehicles as forensic teams canvassed the parking lot and interviewed traumatized employees. New Jersey officials, including Gov. Mikie Sherrill, confirmed they are monitoring the situation closely.
“My thoughts are with those injured and their families,” Sherrill stated on X (formerly Twitter). “I am grateful to our first responders for their swift action and continued efforts to keep the community safe.”
