Dallas, Texas — A 19-year-old man is facing a murder charge after police say he was connected to the fatal shooting of a man accused of assaulting his girlfriend just days earlier.
The case, unfolding in Dallas, Texas, involves allegations of sexual assault, threats with a weapon, and a deadly shooting that investigators say may have been fueled by retaliation.
Man Found Shot Dead at Apartment Complex
According to an arrest affidavit, officers responded around 5:24 p.m. on April 24 to reports of a shooting at 3015 East Ledbetter Drive.
When police arrived at the apartment complex, they found Sylvester Adzati dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.
As officers were responding, the original 911 caller reportedly described seeing a man wearing an orange shirt and black shorts running through the apartment complex immediately after the shooting.
Police soon spotted a suspect matching the description nearby, but authorities say the individual fled on foot when officers approached.
Suspect Found Hiding in Doghouse
Investigators later located the suspect, identified as Nehemiah Isaiah Johnson, hiding inside a doghouse in the area.
According to police, Johnson was taken into custody, and officers also recovered a shirt matching the suspect description from a nearby yard.
Authorities additionally recovered a cellphone near the shooting scene that became part of the ongoing investigation.
Surveillance footage from the apartment complex allegedly showed Johnson lingering around the area before the shooting and then leaving shortly afterward.
Girlfriend Allegedly Assaulted Days Earlier
During questioning, Johnson reportedly told investigators that Adzati knew his girlfriend and had allegedly assaulted her two days before the fatal shooting.
According to the affidavit, Johnson claimed Adzati allegedly held a weapon to the woman’s head and demanded sex while preventing her from leaving.
Johnson said he only learned about the alleged assault on the day of the shooting.
“I was just crying, and somebody came up to me and asked me what was wrong,” Johnson allegedly said.
He also told police he did not know the identity of the person who allegedly shot Adzati.
Girlfriend Confirms Alleged Incident
Police say Johnson’s girlfriend later confirmed parts of the alleged assault during interviews with investigators.
According to the affidavit, she told officers that Adzati allegedly took her phone and held her inside his vehicle against her will.
Authorities stated that she did not report the incident immediately because she felt threatened and feared for her safety.
The allegations added another layer of complexity to the investigation as detectives worked to establish a motive behind the shooting.
