PORTLAND, TN — A quiet neighborhood in Portland, Tennessee, was the scene of an unimaginable tragedy on the morning of April 20, as a 7-month-old baby girl lost her life following an attack by the family’s pet dog.
The incident has left both the local community and first responders reeling from the emotional weight of the event.
A Morning of Chaos on the Back Porch
The Portland Police Department received a distress call around 7:00 AM local time regarding a deceased infant at a residence. According to official press releases, the situation unfolded when the family dog entered the home through a back door.
Once inside, the animal attacked the infant. Officers arriving at the scene confirmed that the 7-month-old girl had already succumbed to the severe injuries sustained during the sudden assault.
The mother of the child, whose identity is being withheld at this time, was also caught in the fray. While she sustained injuries during the attack, local reports from WSMV indicate that she is expected to make a physical recovery.
Police Forced to Euthanize Animal at Scene
Upon arrival, officers encountered the dog, which was identified as an English Mastiff. The animal reportedly continued to exhibit aggressive behavior toward the responding emergency personnel.
Due to the immediate threat to the safety of those present and the volatile nature of the animal, officers made the difficult decision to euthanize the dog on-site.
The family member who spoke with local media expressed total shock, noting that the family had owned the Mastiff for “several years.” Up until that morning, the pet had reportedly shown no prior history of aggression or violence, making the sudden turn even more baffling and tragic for the survivors.
Impact on the Portland Community
The Portland Police Department released a heartfelt statement following the investigation, acknowledging the gravity of the loss:
“The Portland Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family during this extraordinarily difficult time. We also recognize the emotional impact such incidents have on first responders and appreciate their professionalism in handling this tragic situation.”
Maternal and child safety experts often remind pet owners that even long-term family pets can react unpredictably to new stimuli or changes in the home environment, though such fatal incidents remain statistically rare.
Support for the Family
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the grieving mother and her relatives. No charges have been filed at this time, as all evidence suggests a tragic accident within the home.
The identity of the infant has not been released out of respect for the family’s privacy during their period of mourning.
