Galveston, Texas — A teenage boy was rushed to the hospital after suffering a shark bite during a frightening boating incident off the Texas coast near Galveston.
Authorities said the 17-year-old victim was injured Monday afternoon while out on the water with his father and another individual.
Shark Attack Occurred During Attempt to Bring Animal on Boat
According to reports, the incident happened at approximately 3:15 p.m. local time on May 25 when the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office contacted the U.S. Coast Guard for emergency assistance.
Officials said the teenager was bitten by a shark while the group was attempting to bring the animal onto their boat.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed what species of shark was involved in the attack.
The situation quickly became critical as the teen began suffering significant bleeding from the bite wound.
Father Acts Quickly to Save Son
The victim’s father immediately stepped in to provide emergency medical aid following the attack.
According to reports, he applied a tourniquet in an attempt to stop the bleeding before rescue crews could arrive at the scene.
The group reportedly spent several hours offshore before eventually contacting authorities after their boat became disabled near the jetties while returning toward the Galveston Yacht Basin.
It remains unclear what caused the boat to become disabled during the emergency.
Coast Guard Launches Emergency Rescue
After receiving the distress call, the U.S. Coast Guard rushed to assist the injured teenager and the stranded group offshore.
Rescue crews reportedly applied a second tourniquet to help control the severe bleeding caused by the shark bite.
Authorities worked quickly to stabilize the teenager before transporting him for additional medical treatment.
Despite the terrifying circumstances, officials said the teen remained conscious and alert throughout the rescue operation.
Teen Hospitalized After Attack
The injured teenager was eventually transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston for treatment.
