Martin County, Florida – Three young people lost their lives in two separate traffic crashes over the weekend in Martin County, prompting grief across the community and renewed warnings from local law enforcement about speeding and nighttime driving risks.
Deadly Overnight Crash in Hobe Sound
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the first crash occurred around 10 p.m. Friday near the intersection of SE Bridge Road and Interstate 95 in Hobe Sound.
Deputies said a 17-year-old male student at Martin County High School and a 16-year-old female from Jupiter were killed in the collision. A 13-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries and was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where the child remains in critical condition.
The driver of the second vehicle involved sustained minor injuries. Authorities confirmed that family members have been notified, but the victims’ names are not being released due to their ages.
What Investigators Say Happened
A crash report released Monday by the Florida Highway Patrol detailed the sequence of events.
Investigators said the Toyota Camry driven by the 17-year-old was exiting southbound I-95 when it failed to stop at a posted stop sign at SE Bridge Road. At the same time, a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old from Hobe Sound was traveling westbound on SE Bridge Road.
The westbound vehicle struck the left side of the Toyota, causing it to be pushed across the center median, through the eastbound lanes, and into the southbound entrance ramp, where it finally came to rest in a waterlogged grassy area.
The 17-year-old driver and 16-year-old passenger were pronounced dead at Jupiter Medical Center. The injured 13-year-old continues to receive treatment at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Second Fatal Crash Claims 20-Year-Old Driver
Less than 24 hours later, another deadly crash occurred in Martin County.
Investigators said a 20-year-old man was killed after losing control of his vehicle on Seabranch Boulevard near U.S. 1. The vehicle struck a tree and burst into flames.
The driver was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
A 20-year-old female passenger was able to escape the burning vehicle with the help of a good Samaritan. She was airlifted to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, where she remains in the intensive care unit.
Investigators believe excessive speed played a significant role in the single-vehicle crash. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate both incidents.
Crisis Teams Deployed at Martin County High School
In response to the death of a student, the Martin County School District confirmed that its Crisis Response Team is present at Martin County High School and will remain available throughout the week.
The district said the team includes five social service workers trained in grief counseling, along with school counselors providing support to students and staff. Counselors are also following the affected student’s class schedule to ensure help is available throughout the school day.
Sheriff Urges Caution, Parental Awareness
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office described the crashes as a somber start to the new year on local roads.
Sheriff John Budensiek urged drivers, particularly young drivers, to slow down, stay alert, and use extra caution at night. He also encouraged parents to have conversations with their children about the weekend’s events.
He advised families to talk through what happened, explain how such crashes can be prevented, and carefully vet who their children are riding with.
