UNION TOWNSHIP, NJ — A month-long manhunt for the suspect behind a terrifying mass shooting at a local Chick-fil-A has come to an end. Authorities confirmed on Friday that Jaheed Fields, 20, of Newark, was taken into custody in connection with the attack that left one person dead and six others wounded.
The shooting, which occurred at the popular restaurant’s Route 22 location last month, sent shockwaves through the community as families and diners fled for their lives.
The Arrest and Serious Charges
Fields was located and apprehended by law enforcement on Hayes Street in Newark. He is currently being held at the Essex County Jail awaiting his first court appearance.
The Union County Prosecutor’s Office and Union Police Department have leveled a series of heavy charges against the 20-year-old:
- First-Degree Murder (1 count)
- First-Degree Attempted Murder (6 counts)
- Second-Degree Firearms Offenses
A Brazen Attack in a “Safe Space”
The shooting was caught on chilling dashcam footage, showing a masked gunman fleeing the Chick-fil-A as the sounds of chaos erupted from the building. Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel addressed the public following the arrest, emphasizing the severity of the crime.
“The brazen nature of this incident, occurring in a crowded restaurant where people should feel safe, was an affront to our citizens,” Daniel said. He credited the “meticulous work and seamless coordination” between Newark and Union agencies for bringing the suspect into custody.
