Wet, Gloomy Weather Arrives in Maryland Just in Time to Kick Off the Weekend

Maryland residents are heading into a damp and unsettled weekend as steady rain and cooler temperatures settle across the region. Forecasters have designated Saturday as an Alert Weather Day, warning that persistent rain, gray skies, and chilly air could impact outdoor plans through much of the day.

The soggy stretch marks the beginning of a colder and more unsettled weather pattern expected to dominate the second half of January.

Rain Spreads Across Maryland Late Friday Into Saturday

Scattered rain showers moved through Maryland late Friday, with wet conditions becoming more widespread overnight. While a brief lull in rainfall was expected during the late-night hours, clouds and areas of fog were forecast to develop as temperatures slowly climbed into the lower 50s across much of central Maryland before midnight.

By early Saturday morning, rain becomes more organized and steady, prompting the Alert Weather Day designation. Forecasters caution that the rain may persist for several hours, especially during the morning and midday periods.

Steady Rain, Cool Temperatures on Saturday

Saturday is expected to be cool, damp, and overcast, with periods of steady rain gradually transitioning to scattered showers by the afternoon. Rainfall totals are forecast to range from around half an inch for most areas, with localized totals exceeding one inch in some spots.

Temperatures will remain nearly steady throughout the day, hovering in the low to mid-40s, making it feel raw and chilly despite the absence of winter precipitation for most of the state.

Meteorologists note that the rain is much needed, as Maryland continues to experience drought conditions. The rainfall will also help wash away residual salt and treatment materials still lingering on roads and sidewalks from early-season winter weather last month.

Sunday Brings Strong Winds and a Return to Winter Chill

The second half of the weekend will feel markedly different as colder air and gusty winds move in behind Saturday’s rain. Sunday is expected to feature a mix of sun and clouds, but temperatures will struggle to warm, peaking in the low to mid-40s.

Strong northwest winds will be the dominant weather story, with gusts between 30 and 40 mph across much of the state. Factoring in the wind, it may feel like the 20s by early Sunday evening, especially after sunset.

In higher elevations, wind gusts could reach up to 50 mph, creating hazardous travel and outdoor conditions.

Mountain Snow and Wintry Mix Possible Late Sunday

Colder air will also bring the chance for mountain snow showers, particularly in Garrett County, beginning Sunday afternoon and continuing into early Monday morning.

Elsewhere, including parts of the Baltimore metro area and the Eastern Shore, spotty rain showers may mix with snow or sleet during the afternoon and early evening hours, especially between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., as winds increase.

Looking Ahead: More Cold and Potential Wintry Weather

Forecasters say the overall weather pattern favors continued cold conditions and the potential for additional wintry weather as January progresses. The first meaningful opportunity for more widespread winter weather may arrive late next workweek, though details are still evolving.

Weather officials urge residents to stay updated, particularly as wind-driven cold and changing precipitation types could create localized travel issues.
