Woman Critically Injured After Being Struck by Pittsburgh Regional Transit Bus in Oakland

A woman in her late 20s was critically injured Monday night after being hit by a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, according to transit officials and emergency responders.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. as the bus was making a left turn from Neville Street onto Fifth Avenue. A spokesperson for Pittsburgh Regional Transit confirmed that the bus struck a pedestrian during the turn. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was last listed in critical but stable condition.

Witnesses in the busy Oakland area described hearing distressing sounds moments after the crash. Carnegie Mellon University student Hailey Price said she initially thought the noise was part of the usual nighttime activity in the neighborhood.

“I heard very loud guttural screams that were clearly female,” Price said. “At first, I didn’t think much of it because there are often loud noises around this area. Then, a few minutes later, I heard loud engines and sirens.”

According to Allegheny County 911, emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. First responders arrived to find the injured woman at the intersection, and she was quickly taken to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities said no additional injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved in the incident. The identity of the woman has not been released.

Port Authority police are leading the investigation into the crash. Officials have not yet said whether any citations were issued or whether factors such as speed, visibility, or traffic signals may have contributed. Investigators are expected to review witness statements and any available surveillance or onboard bus footage as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit officials said they are cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues. The incident has renewed concerns among residents and commuters about pedestrian safety in Oakland, one of the city’s busiest areas due to heavy traffic, university activity, and frequent public transit use.

More information is expected to be released as the investigation develops.
