HACKENSACK, NJ — A 25-year-old woman is hospitalized with severe injuries after plunging 10 stories down a narrow trash chute inside a New Jersey apartment complex. Authorities suspect the victim was experiencing a severe episode of drug- and alcohol-fueled paranoia when she intentionally climbed inside the disposal system.
The high-stakes rescue operation took nearly half an hour as firefighters were forced to saw through metal infrastructure to extract her from a mountain of compacted garbage.
Panic and Screams in the Hallway
The terrifying incident unfolded just after 1:00 PM on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at a high-rise complex in Hackensack.
According to building residents, the woman had been visiting a friend but left the apartment in a visibly frantic and paranoid state.
Witnesses on the 14th floor reported hearing frantic “knocking” on several apartment doors before the woman sprinted into a communal garbage room alone.
Massiel Gutierrez, a resident who was throwing away boxes in a 7th-floor disposal room at the time, recalled hearing the terrifying descent.
“All I hear is screaming… screaming in a different language,” Gutierrez told CBS. “I got so freaked that I left, I ran. [Then] I was like wait, hold up, maybe somebody needs help.”
Trapped in the Chute: The 28-Minute Rescue
Emergency crews rushed to the scene but initially struggled to locate the victim.
Firefighters eventually traced her screams to the 4th floor, where her fall had been abruptly halted. Because the 3-foot-wide chute was heavily backed up with trash, she was completely pinned and trapped inside the metal tube.
Hackensack Fire Chief Keith Rosazza explained that standard access doors were completely useless due to her position, forcing crews to launch a tactical breaching operation:
- Breaching the Structure: Firefighters deployed power saws to cut away heavy panels on the chute’s discharge system.
- Clearing the Blockage: Crews carefully extracted piles of accumulated trash from beneath her to create an escape path without causing her to drop further.
- The Extraction: Exactly 28 minutes after arriving on the scene, emergency teams safely pulled the woman out from the bottom of the structure.

Severe Injuries and Current Status
The woman was rushed to a local trauma center with significant, severe injuries to her lower body, though she is expected to survive the fall.
One Hackensack firefighter also required medical treatment after sustaining a deep laceration to his arm from the jagged, sliced metal during the rescue.
While an official criminal investigation is ongoing, Hackensack police stated that early evidence strongly indicates the woman was heavily intoxicated and under the influence of narcotics, which triggered the severe paranoia that led her to climb into the chute.
With high-rise trash chutes posing a unique hazard during mental health or substance-induced crises, do you think apartment complexes should install magnetic locks on disposal doors that require a key fob to open?
