Marquette, Michigan – Authorities and community members continue searching for answers after a 21-year-old college student disappeared more than two weeks ago after leaving a bar in downtown Marquette during severe winter weather.
According to the Marquette Police Department, Trenton Massey, a student at Northern Michigan University, was last seen around 3 a.m. on February 22 near the shoreline of Lake Superior.
Investigators say surveillance footage captured Massey walking near Founders Landing Boardwalk before he eventually disappeared from camera view.
Police said the student appeared disoriented and had difficulty walking shortly before he vanished.
Surveillance Footage Shows Last Known Movements
Authorities say camera footage showed Massey walking along the boardwalk area and eventually heading out toward the ice near the pier.
Investigators lost sight of him after he moved beyond the camera’s view.
Officials believe Massey had left a local bar and was walking home alone at the time.
Police said Massey may have been impaired and struggling to walk steadily when he was last seen.
At the time of his disappearance, a powerful winter storm had been moving through the region.
Blizzard Conditions Complicated the Search
The night Massey went missing, the area was experiencing blizzard conditions with heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.
Officials say temperatures were around 20°F, and investigators noted that Massey was not dressed appropriately for the extreme cold.
Authorities say severe weather conditions made the search especially difficult.
Lt. Brian Kurin with the Marquette County Sheriff’s Special Operations Division explained that fluctuating temperatures made it difficult to determine whether someone could have fallen through the ice.
“Holes are freezing up, new ones are opening up, so it’s hard to say what reliably could’ve been where someone fell through,” Kurin said.
Police Pause Search Efforts
After several days of searching the area, police announced on February 25 that they would pause active search operations unless new information emerges.
Authorities said crews had used all available resources while searching the surrounding land, shoreline, and frozen areas.
“We’ve searched everything we could possibly search with all of the equipment that we’ve had available to us,” said Marquette Police Chief Ryan Grim.
Officials say the investigation remains open even though organized search operations have been suspended.
Students and Volunteers Join Search Effort
Following Massey’s disappearance, hundreds of volunteers and fellow students joined the effort to search for him.
Search teams examined areas surrounding Founders Landing Boardwalk, where the student was last seen.
One volunteer, Ryder Amesbury, said he had seen Massey at the bar earlier that evening.

“It was an absolute blizzard that night,” Amesbury said. “I got lost walking home myself.”
Residents were also asked to check security cameras, vehicles, garages, and outbuildings for any possible signs of the missing student.
Community Shows Support for Family
In the weeks since Massey vanished, the local community has rallied around his family.
The Texas Roadhouse restaurant where Massey worked organized a vigil on March 2, bringing together residents and volunteers who participated in search efforts.
Massey’s family thanked volunteers who braved the cold weather to help search for him.
Local residents have also created social media groups and online pages to share information and coordinate volunteer efforts.
Authorities say they continue to encourage anyone with information about Massey’s disappearance to come forward.
