Authorities are investigating a late-afternoon shooting in Sacramento that left four people injured, including a 4-year-old child, in what police believe may have been a drive-by attack.
According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers responded around 6 p.m. Wednesday to reports of gunfire in the 3300 block of 9th Avenue near 33rd Street in the Oak Park area. When officers arrived, they located multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Police confirmed that the victims include two adult men, one adult woman, and a young child. One of the victims is a 4-year-old. All four were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police spokesperson Anthony Gamble said preliminary information indicates that all victims are currently in stable condition.
Investigators said three of the victims appear to be connected. Family members and neighbors told CBS News Sacramento that the group included a grandmother and her two grandchildren, ages 18 and 4. Authorities have not officially released their identities.
The fourth victim was found inside a nearby home. Police stated that, at this stage of the investigation, there appears to be no known connection between that individual and the other three victims.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire rang out along the residential street. At least one parked vehicle was struck by bullets, highlighting the potential risk to others in the area at the time of the shooting.
A relative of the three related victims said they had just been out together getting ice cream and were returning home when the shooting occurred.
Neighbor Larry Devore said he recognized the injured woman and rushed to help after finding her inside her vehicle with a gunshot wound to her abdomen.
“It’s shocking when it’s someone you know,” Devore said, describing the moment he saw his neighbor injured. He said she repeatedly expressed confusion about why she had been targeted. “She kept saying she didn’t understand why. Nobody understands why.”
Early investigative details suggest the shooting may have been a drive-by. However, police have not yet identified a suspect or a suspect vehicle, and no arrests have been announced. Officers canvassed the neighborhood for surveillance footage and potential witnesses as detectives worked to piece together what led to the gunfire.
The Oak Park community, a long-standing residential area in south Sacramento, was left shaken by the violence, especially given the involvement of a young child. Residents expressed concern about safety and called for swift action to identify those responsible.
Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as the investigation remains active.
